Area Information for Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina

Fuquay Varina is a beautiful community located in Southern Wake County.  As of the 2010 Census, it had a population of 18,000.

Like many of the communities in Wake County, the town originally developed because of its tobacco trade and agriculture.

Many people will often ask me about the origins of this community’s names. Here’s the story.

A Frenchman named William Fuquay first settled the area in the 1800s, when the area was still called Sippihaw for the original Native American tribe who lived there.

Later, Fuquay’s great-grandson, who was a farmer, would discover a spring on the land while plowing the fields of the family plantation.

Soon, the spring developed a reputation for having water with healing powers.  This of course led many people to the area, seeking out the spring’s water and a community formed.

The second part of the town’s name comes from another area resident named J.D. Ballentine.  Ballentine later became the first postmaster at the new post office in the town, still known as Sippihaw at the time.

He named the post office in honor of a woman he’d fallen in love with by the name of Virginia Avery, who signed her name as Varina in letters.

Steadily, another community developed just south of the Post Office.

Today’s Fuquay-Varina was named when Fuquay Springs and Varina came together as one community in 1963.

Fuquay-Varina is now home to several high-tech industries and businesses, making it a major draw for interested home buyers.

It’s proximity to the Research Triangle Park is also a major draw.
