Area Information for Durham, North Carolina

Durham, North Carolina makes up one third of the three traditional points on the Research Triangle.  Two other communities – Raleigh and Chapel Hill – make up the other two points.

Durham, which is the county seat of Durham County, is considered the fifth largest city in the state.  Its population was 228,330 as of the 2010 Census.

This Durham County city has a long history of commitment to excellence in education.  In fact, one of the top performing private schools in the country – Duke University – is located in Durham.

In addition, Durham can credit a lot of its early growth to the proliferation of the tobacco industry in the area.  And in the 1960s, it was considered a focal point in the Civil Rights movement.

Education in Durham

Durham residents are served by Durham Public Schools, which is the eighth largest school district in the state.

Additionally, there are a number of specialty schools within Durham’s borders, including Durham School of the Arts as well as the City of Medicine Academy.

The North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics is also located in Durham.

This diverse selection of educational facilities in Durham earned the city a spot on Forbes.com’s “Top 20 Places to Educate Your Child” in 2007. 

What’s more, there are several colleges and universities within just a short driving distance of Durham.  In addition to Duke University, there is also the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University nearby.

Thing to do on the Durham, NC Real Estate Market

Because of its proximity to so many colleges and universities, the ACC and NCAA tournaments in the springtime always tend to draw big crowds and events to Durham.

In addition, the Durham Bulls baseball team  is also based out of the city.

For those who enjoy the arts, the Durham Performing Arts Center always seems to have a new play or concert to present to the public. 

And the Durham-based shopping center, the Streets at Southpoint, is always a major draw for residents all over the region.
